FAQ

Location

The conference venue is the Budapest Marriott.

Flights are available from several UK airports into Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport (BUD). The Budapest  Marriott hotel is a 40 minute drive from the airport and there are taxis available from the airport, including Uber. There are also train, subway, and bus stations available nearby.

Yes, Budapest is generally a safe destination for UK tourists, but it's essential to take standard precautions against petty crime like pickpocketing and theft, especially in crowded areas of the city. Be aware of your surroundings, look out for scams, and remain informed about local developments and any travel advisories issued by the UK government. Please also see the section below on LGBTQ+ travellers.

R3’s annual conference is designed to bring together members from across the UK and internationally to share knowledge, build professional networks, and strengthen the restructuring, turnaround and insolvency professional community. The search as to where to hold our annual conferences begins around two years before the event. So, the decision to host in Budapest was made for example before the Hungarian government’s recent announcement.

R3’s values are rooted in respect, diversity, and inclusion, and we have sought and received reassurance from our local event partners to ensure that all attendees feel welcome and safe throughout the event.

We have explored this option carefully. Relocating the event at this stage would have significant contractual, logistical, and financial implications for our members and partners. Instead, we are focusing on ensuring that our event embodies R3’s inclusive values by ensuring visible support and reassurances for all attendees.

The government travel advice for Hungary explains that Budapest is generally tolerant and open of LGBTQ+ travellers and same sex relationships are legal in Hungary. Nevertheless, we are taking practical steps to make the event inclusive and supportive for all participants. These include:

  • Working with our local event partners for guidance.
  • Providing clear travel and safety information to attendees.
  • Highlighting R3’s commitment to diversity and inclusion in our conference materials and programming.

We appreciate that optics matter and this is not a decision we take lightly. However, holding our conference in Budapest provides an opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to inclusion and demonstrate that our values travel with us, wherever we are.

That R3 remains steadfast in its support for diversity and inclusion. Alongside our external DEI commitments, we have internal structures and programmes, such as our joint project with the Insolvency Service around equity, diversity & inclusion consisting of a steering group, action plan and a network of DEI champions.

We understand that some members may feel disappointed or conflicted about the location, and we respect those perspectives. Our focus now is on ensuring that everyone who wishes to attend feels safe, valued, and represented — and that our event reflects the best of our professional community’s values.
